Gravity Falls On Stage
Conceptual Designs
These are concepts based on the cartoon Gravity Falls created by Alex Hirsch! I am no way attempting to claim ownership over the source material. All I'm saying is, if anyone wants Gravity Falls on stage and needs a costume designer. They should call me. And if they need a Pacifica or Mabel they should also call me.
My concept for this "show" is what if the twins came back to gravity falls after their senior year of high school? What's changed? What's exactly the same? And what mysteries are afoot? I aimed to walk the line between recreating the characters exactly, and coming up with completely grounded and unrecognizable costumes. I want everyone to see the characters they know and love while really bringing them to life!
Dipper Pines
Dipper is a very analytical, go getter. He could care less about showering, let alone fashion. So I wanted to find a way to make his design still cartoonishly appealing, while not overwriting his personality. I did this with lots of pockets! Cargo pants, a denim overshirt to call back to his vest. I love little details, they help ground the actor while also giving diehard fans and cosplayers some wonderful easter eggs! So I have one of those cheap rubber bracelets that I imagine The Mystery Shack would sell, and a matching bracelet with Pacifica (because it's my concept, so they will be in love). Lots of treasures from his travels, and of course a pine tree hat. I imagine Mabel made him a new one after he traded hats with wendy at the end of the show. He's also sporting an arm guard for monster hunting! I liked the drawings of eyes on his shoes, maybe he drew those in class with white out and pen when he couldn't shake the feeling Bill was still watching...
Mabel Pines
Mabel is crafty, excitable, and vibrant! I think it would be brilliant to have Mabel change sweaters every single scene but for now let's start with her classic shooting star! It's a bit cliché to keep her design so on the nose, but if anyone hasn't changed since the summer we last saw her it would be miss Mabel Pines. I'm most proud of the idea to paint bandaids and stickers to flesh toned tights, that way they last and can't irritate the actor's skin! She has rainbow nails, fishnet gloves, and a matching bff bracelet with Pacifica. The socks are, of course, references to her music sweater on the left and a summerween jack-o-melon on the right. Overall I wanted Mabel feel the same in terms of her bold, colorful style, while showing she's grown up juuust a bit!
Pacifica Northwest
Pacifca is a recovering spoiled rich kid. She's fashionable, and calculated, but after her character arc in the show, and a few years at school she's loosened up a bit and found herself to be a bit more down to earth. I wanted lots of little accents of lake foam green to show her growth in being true to herself and not the pompous Northwest heir she was groomed to be. She of course has her matching bracelets with the twins. Her design has lots of lines and sharp angles not only to give her some contrast against the twins but also to hint at her sharper toungue and lower tolerance for shenanigans.
Waddles The Pig
Not much to saw about sweet Waddles, he was clearly inspired by the construction of Milky White in the broadway revival of Into The Woods. He would be a very simple puppet with an articulated middle section, dangly front legs, and a scrunchable nose! Such a cutie pie! I'd imagine a townsperson ensemble member would puppet him, but maybe mabel takes over at times! That would be so sweet!
Bill Cipher
The last time we officially saw Bill he was, of course, erased inside Stan's mind. But as we know "we'll meet again, some sunny day". And that day has come! Our first look at Bill will be as a shadow puppet! with one translucent yellow eye with a working eyelid. My thought was as he slowly gains his strength back he wouldn't have the ability to conjur his physical form, so with his first burst of strength, he returns to us as a shadow puppet! Puppeteered by fliers in the rafters.
Bill Cipher!!! If you thought I'd dream up a production that wouldn't have our big-bad big and back you'd be mistaken! I wanted a few iterations of Bill to show his progression in gaining his power and control back. The next step in Bill's formation will be as a found object puppet! After his shadow form, he would possess several objects to act as his tangible body! A light bulb would be a silly and functional top hat, a frayed wire could spark blue as his iconic blue flames for making a deal! Puppeteered by fliers in the rafters.
In our big climax of the show! The big bad battle if you will. Bill will be back in his full glory! Stronger than ever! A large stick puppet that spins, showing his three faces! Bill Cipher classic, angry red Bill, and terrifyingly power blue Bill with pop out flames! His hat of course will also spin to match each face. I wanted this Bill to be a pyramid instead of a triangle to show he has reached new heights of power!
